Breaking News: High Court Denies Bail for Teddy Afro

FORTUNE - The Federal High Court has this morning denied bail for the release of Tewodros Kassahun (Teddy Afro). The 30-year-old sensational singer, who is accused of a hit and run homicide, will spend the duration of his trial in prison.

The court has ruled to hear four witnesses- all police constables- referred by the prosecutor against the singer on May 21, 2008. This was despite his defense lawyer Million Assefa’s request that the witnesses should testify within a maximum of one week, if not today.

The prosecutor rather requested the bench to be given a reasonable time to summon all the witnesses, and was therefore given 22 days.

When the proceeding was adjourned, the popular singer Teddy burst into tears, sources told Fortune. He was not alone: a number of fans that gathered to follow his trial, amid the tight security, left the compound crying.

On November 3, 2006, investigators from the Addis Abeba Police Commission arrested Teddy, accusing him of killing 18-year-old Degu Yibelete, a street dweller who came from Gojjam. After he was put under custody for a day, Teddy was released on 50,000Br bail on November 4.

The popular singer was formally charged on April 16, 2008 on two counts, homicide (including driving without license) and fleeing the scene of a crime. Homicide would carry up to a 15-year prison sentence and hence make him eligible for bail. Nevertheless, prosecutors added another charge of failure to help a victim whom one has injured. This involves an additional penalty of one month to two years, thus he could face up to 17 years in prison if found guilty.

Although his defense lawyer had requested the merger of the two charges in the earlier hearing, it was not accepted.

Ethiopian law stipulates that defendants involved in crimes carrying sentences greater than 15 years shall not be permitted bail.

    Of course, we cannot know whether Teddy is innocent or not. But to me this looks really suspicious! The government wants him in jail, so they just fabricate a reason to put him behind bars for as long as possible. My God - more than 15 years!
    Really, let me tell you: I didn’t like his songs much because of Jah Yasteseriyal. “Jah” means Haile Selassie for the Rastafarians, and to most of them Haile Selassie is God. This is so crazy! Really, I don’t like this song. I mean, the melody is nice and all, also the political message and all. But really, Teddy should have chosen other lyrics. But when I heard about this case, I felt so sorry for him. Poor Teddy! I like his songs more now hahaha. He does have a good voice, writes nice melodies and all.
    Anyways … hopefully it will go well for him.

For those who have heard his songs, that description of him by NPR is fitting. Teddy is a gifted artist who created new melodies by combining Afro-Caribbean music styles with Horn of African sounds. For instance, he fused Hadiya’s traditional wedding song with reggae beats to come up with one of his hits - Seleme. In the middle of his flourishing career, however, he was allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run automobile accident in November 2006. Teddy has been free on bail since that time, but Woyane has finally used the hit-and-run alleged crime to tighten the noose around Teddy’s neck. Now Teddy Afro is languishing in Woyane’s most notorious prisons - Qaallitti. He is an inmate in a prison where more than 85% of the inmates are Oromo prisoners of conscience. Being inmates of this same notorious prison is where the similarity between Teddy Afro and the other 85% Oromo prisoners of conscience ends. Most of Teddy’s fans see his imprisonment as a political persecution and are campaigning worldwide to free him from Woyane’s firm grip. Some of his fans have even gotten the support of a U.S. Congressman. U.S. Congressman Dana Rohrabacher of California told Woyane’s Ambassador to the United States to “free Teddy Afro immediately” in a 4-word letter on April 29, 2008. Since Teddy’s imprisonment, there have been numerous articles and blogs urging readers to take Teddy as another Woyane victim, and rallies organized to solicit more diplomatic pressures on the TPLF-led regime to free Teddy. The same websites that “broke the news” that the Empire’s “prisons speak Afaan Oromoo” are churning out campaign articles to free Teddy. There is no doubt that Teddy Afro is a victim of Woyane’s persecution. There is no doubt that Teddy should receive the due process of law for the crime he allegedly committed with the principle of “being innocent until proven guilty.” There is also no doubt that his fans, and fellow countrymen and countrywomen should be campaigning to free Teddy! With that said, it is sad to imagine how the 85% Oromo prisoners of conscience of Qaallitti feel about their destinies as the world rallies to free a single inmate, Teddy. It is very hard to convince those prisoners and their relatives that Ethiopia is a country that does not subject them to oppression because of their ethnic background; in fact, Woyane threw them into concentration camps for being Oromo, then the Diaspora Ethiopians ignored their situations for being Oromo for years until the born-again-freedom-fighter Aite Seye Abraha “broke the news” that Ethiopian “prisons speak Afaan Oromoo” in 2007. Yet again, it is very sad to witness that in an Empire where the “prisons speak Afaan Oromoo”, there has been no “free Oromo prisoners of conscience” campaigns from all corners of the Diaspora and Ethiopia. It is neither fair nor ethical to single out Teddy Afro and campaign vigorously for his release, and leave out the other thousands of Woyane’s victims. It is time to build this momentum up in order to campaign for Teddy Afro’s and the thousands of Oromo and other prisoners’ of conscience unconditionally releases from all Woyane’s Auschwitz concentration camps NOW! It is time to go beyond petty differences and strive to work for common goals. Free Teddy Afro - Indeed! Free ALSO all other PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE languishing in Woyane’s Auschwitz concentration camps!

    Hiwete, i have already told u why i have Teddy afro. But even if i hate him, i am not happy to be in jail if he is not found guilty.For sure i can’t say any thing about the car accident. No one except he and god knows about it.
